A child of former residential school parents Leanne Trudeau leaves the Reserve to complete secondary school and college graduating degrees in journalism and business administration. Upon graduation she commuted from her home community for work in her chosen fields. Attending Reserve social activities on weekends the young woman becomes romantically involved with a police officer training reserve community police recruits. After an unplanned pregnancy Leanne agrees to marry policeman Bruce Ross and move to the city so their new son can receive off-reserve benefits including a higher standard of education.
Turning unreasonably jealous and unfairly suspicious of Leanne's work activities Bruce demands she leave a job at the major media corporation to become a stay-at-home mother. Becoming domineering after moving to the city while at the same time practicing unfaithfulness to their marriage Bruce is killed by a jealous husband during a rendezvous with a female fellow police officer.
Leanne spends the next year dealing with the aftermath of his death while arranging for son Trevor to continue schooling and coping with Bruce's unsupportive parents and family. Initially spending time between her own parent's home on reserve and an apartment shared with son Trevor in the city, she eventually returns to work with the media corporation where her past reputation as an above average accomplisher leads to an offer to develop a newly created organization as senior manager.
During an overseas business trip Leanne meets flight attendant Jennifer daughter of author, international journalist and former friend Nick Fairburn. The attractive woman's father is a man Leanne helped with research while employed occasionally at a library during her marriage to Bruce. Having dinner together one single time in a prestigious dining room as reward for the help leaves Leanne with a lasting impression of Nick as a handsome widowed family man dedicated to his only daughter.
After being introduced to Jennifer by his mother son Trevor and Jenny become romantically involved meeting again during a flight to England where he is expanding his studies. At the same time the friendship between Leanne and Nick soon leads to a long delayed romance.
Leading a group of senior media executives opposing the major Canadian political party in power becomes a challenge for Leanne since Nick is presently government foreign affairs minister. She soon discovers his disenchantment with Prime Minster Murphy due to governing practices by several cabinet ministers. The dissatisfaction results in him being replaced as government minister leading to the possibility of Leanne recruiting the high profile executive as the overseas representative for the newly formed media conglomerate she now manages and administers.
Using long latent feminine charm their new romance soon strengthens but also becomes tentative due to Nick's former loyalty to the Prime Minister Murphy led government. Meanwhile failure to enticed Nick to join her media conglomerate under pressure from a group of high profile corporate media executives becomes a problem. Deciding to accept Nick's decision not to become involved Leanne decides to solidify the new romance leading to moving in together. The personal situation serves having a romantic connection with Nick and keeping both families close now the children are dating. The opportunity also allows another opportunity for convincing Nick to become involved in her rapidly expanding worldwide media conglomerate.
Complications occur when Trevor and Jennifer begin planning marriage. The unexpected turn of events brings the two families closer together but due to both children encountering career issues leads to family conflicts. Once the issues are soothed the children move to another area of the country where Trevor expands his education and Jennifer is able to accept an airline job promotion.
When Nick decides to accept an offer to return to a career in foreign journalism with a major media firm information surfaces leading to discovering Leanne's life in danger from political figures. The unorthodox group are found to be using military involvement by government factions needing to control her media corporation.
Re-establishing former international intelligence contacts from his time as government foreign minister, Nick uses diplomatic skills to overcome the threat steeped in international secrecy. The action consolidates Leanne's international media control as CEO of the newly organized international corporation.
Returning to foreign journalism Nick re-establishes worldwide intelligence contacts including a working relationship with foreign international sources. One setback related to his new career and threatening his relationship with Leanne is dealing with previous but still ongoing former romance partners.
Accepting the role of executive manager as part of Leanne's European media organization develops a relationship allowing melding of careers. The solution appears to be the perfect combination for both professional and personal needs fully supporting both Leanne's rapidly changing international media career and a future together.
The new direction also allows Nick's intelligence career to continue after learning high profile associates are not prepared to allow him to leave the international intelligence or diplomatic communities.
